Тhis architectural land-mark is one of 3ust eight unique wooden struc the world. The Russian Orthodox Cathedral of thе Holy Ascension has а striking beauty and splendour.  It was built in  1904 - 1907, designed by the architect AР. Zenkov with wall paintings by Nikolai Khludov.
The cathedral is about 50 metres high уеt, interestingly, it withstood the very severe earth-quake of 1910. Used as а museum during the Soviet period, the cathedral reopened for church services in 1997. There is small souvenir stand inside where Orthodox devotional items can be purchased.
Planting of trees and gardens has always been encouraged in Almaty. In the late XIXth century, every house-owner had to plant near his house 7 - 8 decorative or fruit trees (the example of one - Eduard Baum, a local horticulturist who planted many of the city’s groves).
That tradition has been followed through to the present. Via modern city-planning, parks, gardens and flower-beds surround big office and residential complexes. Almaty residents take pride in their city parks which are favorite recreational and promenade places.
There are streets in the city closed to all vehicles forming long and shady lanes lined with spruces, limes and other trees. These are Tulebaev, Baiseitova, Chaikovski streets. Within the city are nine parks covering 350 h, 40 gardens of 130 h and flower-beds of a total area of 70,000 sq. m.
