Sufi from the Pamir.

Legends of Tajikistan.

“After all, I believe that legends and myths are largely made of 'truth', and indeed present aspects of it that can only be received in this mode; and long ago certain truths and modes of this kind were discovered and must always reappear”

J.R.R. Tolkien, The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien.

Legends of the Pamir.

Hodzhu Tufa, a Sufi from the Pamirs, was once asked why he allows people to extol him. He said: “Some are extolling me, some are attacking me.” We are not responsible neither for those who extol us, nor for those who attack us.
The behavior of both of them does not depend on us in any way, and in reality they do not pay attention to us at all. To object to those who do not pay attention to us is an empty matter. As for those who do not exalt us and do not attack us, we work with some of them and have a similar attitude.
But such people are not noticed, and therefore begin to identify themselves with extollers or with protesters. Such activity is a kind of bazaar where everything is sold and bought. True activity is invisible. Looking back on praises and attacks means looking at things that are irrelevant.
The irrelevant is often more apparent than the irrelevant. To be interested in catchy is more than significant - a common thing, but useless. And do not neglect the words once said by Zilzilavi: “When fools exalt me, I encourage them.
When they get to the limit in this, they will at least have the opportunity to notice that excessiveness is stupid. At the same time, if they exaggerate me excessively, those who are sick of flattery will avoid me: they will think that I encourage praise out of a desire for praise.
But if they are so lacking in the ability of perception that they judge only on the basis of the superficial, then I must avoid them, because I can not help them with anything." The best way to get rid of anything is to make sure that what you want to get rid of is to avoid you of your own free will.
