Ancient settlement Nizhny Barskhan.

Archaeological site in Kazakhstan.

“Barskhan is a city at a distance of two human voices to the east (from Taraz), around it is a wall that has already collapsed. Cathedral mosque among the markets»

Arab geographer al Maksidi.

The ancient shahristans of Kazakhstan.

It is located in the Baizak region, 15 kilometers from the ancient city of Taraz and 1.5 kilometers southeast of the village of Talas. The city is mentioned in Arabic sources of the 10th century Kudama - ibn-Jafar and Makdisi.
Makdisi writes: “Barskhan is a city at a distance of two human voices to the east (from Taraz), around it is a wall that has already collapsed. Cathedral mosque among the markets. " The hillfort has the appearance of a two-tier rectangular hillock in plan (at the base of 310 x 140 meters) 10 meters high, oriented to the cardinal points.
In the topography of the settlement, the citadel and shakhristan are distinguished, surrounded on all sides by a swollen shaft with turrets in the corners and perimeter. There are two entrances to the territory of Shakhristan (east and west), and the main street that went from them.
From the side of the entrances to the settlement adjoin rabads, agricultural districts and estates. Decryption of aerial photographs made it possible to identify around the central ruins the remains of the “long” wall that surrounded the territory, retreating from the central ruins by a distance of 1.5 - 2 kilometers.
Since 2004, archaeological work has begun, followed by the transfer of archaeological artifacts to museums. During archaeological excavations, the remains of the winery, residential and utility rooms, a large amount of ceramics were found.
