Meretsay Canyon is located in the middle, western part of the Tamshaly ravine in the northern part of the Tupkaragan peninsula, 27.4 kilometers northeast of the town of Fort Shevchenko and ends east of Cape Bagarzhik in the Tupkaragan district of the Mangistau region.
Meretsai Canyon, stretches from south-east to north with a huge crack 10.5 kilometers long. In the vicinity of the tract in the west, there are two ancient necropolises Aktam and Shiaulie. The abandoned fishing village of Karagan is located about 3 kilometers north of the ravine.
In the coastal strip of the Tupkaragan Peninsula, there is an extended gorge that cut through the limestone shell of the plateau. A fresh spring is hidden in the gorge, to which every day local shepherds drive flocks of sheep and goats and herds of cows and herds of horses to drink.
Small groves of mulberry trees and suckers hide among the stone heaps of the slopes of the gorge. The green valley, overgrown with weeping old willows, poplars, shrubs, is surrounded by smoky-yellow steeps. 2 kilometers higher from the western side, the Meretsay canyon is adjacent to the Tamshaly canyon with a length of 3 kilometers.
The main attraction of the Tamshaly canyon is the outcropping of an aquiferous clay layer on the ceiling of a small grotto formed by a semicircular dead-end wall of the gorge. Fresh water oozes from the rocky ledge and falls in streams from a height of three meters.
Falling drops make noise like rain. The grotto is never fully illuminated by direct sunlight, so it is cool even on the hottest days. Mighty mulberry trees, apple trees, pears, and junipers grow in the Meretsai Grand Canyon. the slopes of the valley are occupied by melons, tomato and eggplant plantations.
Tamshaly gorge and Meretsay canyon are famous for their small waterfall and fresh water lake. On the one hand, there are sheer cliffs, on the other, a huge valley extending into the Caspian Sea. A thirty-kilometer grader from the town of Fort Shevchenko has been laid here, but the grotto can only be reached by steppe roads or along the plateau with an exit to its edge, or with a descent with an approach to the lake.
