Rama Glacier.

Wildlife Tours Tajikistan.

“A wise man should not stop in a city that does not have five things: first, a just sovereign and a strict and authoritative ruler; secondly, running waters and rich lands; thirdly, scientists with practical knowledge and endowed with moderation; fourthly, skillful and compassionate healers; fifthly, generous benefactors.”

Muhammad ibn Ali As-Samarkandi.

Rama glacier is located on southern slope of Turkestan ridge, in upper reaches of river of same name, in Kukhistoni-Mastchokh district, Sughd region. The glacier belongs to the Zeravshan River basin. The Rama River, 4 kilometers long, flows from the glacier and is the first, right tributary of the Zeravshan River.
The sources of the river are located at an altitude of 2912 meters above sea level. The mouth of the river is located at an altitude of 2751 meters above sea level. The Rama Glacier is located in a narrow rocky gorge. The Rama glacier is a valley glacier, its length is 8.9 kilometers, its area reaches 22.3 square kilometers, the end of the glacier is located at an altitude of 3500 meters above sea level.
The moraine part of the glacier occupies 3 square kilometers. Like all other glaciers in the Zeravshan River basin, the Rama Glacier is retreating.
Historical information about Rama Glacier.
From 1929 to 1975, the glacier retreated 320 meters, freeing 0.12 square kilometers of ice. Moreover, until 1948 it retreated at an average speed of 4 meters per year, and after that - up to 9 meters per year. From 1976 to 1991, the glacier retreated another 356 meters, with the retreat occurring initially at a rate of 15 meters per year, and in the last three years at 60 meters per year, which is explained by the separation and melting of individual ice blocks.
At the same time, about 30 square kilometers were freed up. Since 1988, the Rama Glacier has been shrinking by 85 meters each year and is shrinking by more than 2.6 kilometers.
