In Taraz, on the site of the central city market, in December 2019, the Shakhristan historical and cultural complex was opened as part of the Rukhani Zhagyru program. According to the assumptions of archaeologists, this is the place where the shakhristan of the ancient city was located.
The historical and cultural complex "Shahristan" is a continuation of the existing archaeological complex "Ancient Taraz". In 2011, archaeological excavations of an ancient settlement began here, which is at least 2000 years old. More than 50,000 artifacts of the VIth - XIIth centuries were found here, placed in a museum built here - the only museum of this kind in Kazakhstan, where only exhibits found during archaeological work at the Taraz settlement are presented.
