The building of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR, built in the period from 1948 to 1953. However, the projects were developed during the Great Patriotic War. The building is included in the "State list of historical and cultural monuments of the Kazakh SSR of republican significance" (Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the Kazakh SSR dated January 26, 1982 No. 38) and is under state protection
The complex of buildings of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan is located in Almaty, at Shevchenko Street, 28 and occupies the square of Shevchenko - Kurmangazy - Kunaev - Pushkin streets with a land plot of 3.0906 hectares.
The architecture of the building uses classical motifs and stylized elements of the national ornament. The Museum of Nature is located in the eastern wing of the Academy of Sciences complex. It is one of the divisions of the Institute of Zoology.
You can get to the Museum through the main entrance of the Academy of Sciences. The exposition of the Museum opens the centuries-old veil of time and acquaints visitors with the mysterious world of paleontology and zoology.
The right wing of the building houses the Central Scientific Library with 5.3 million storage units, which occupies two pavilions of the complex with typical book storage rooms. In the 1960s - 1970s of the XXth century, further work was carried out to form an architectural ensemble.
The Square of the Academy of Sciences was born from the unity of architectural and plastic solutions. Landscaped cascades with fountains were laid out along the main axis in front of the main building (architects N. Ripinsky, V. Tolmachev) and a monument to Chokan Valikhanov was erected (1969, State Prize named after Ch. Valikhanov, sculptor K. Nauryzbaev, architects Sh. Valikhanov).
On the eastern side, a monument-bust to A. S. Pushkin was opened in honor of the 200th anniversary of the poet (sculptor A. Bichugov, architects T. Eraliev, A. Anchugov) and the fountain "Signs of the Zodiac" or "Oriental Calendar" (1979, sculptors V. Tverdokhlebov, A. Tatarinov, architect V. Katsev).
The interiors of the House of Scientists used decorative panels, lattices made of ganch (tapestry "City of Apples", artists A. Obedin, 1984). The backdrop of the stage of the conference hall is decorated with a plot Florentine mosaic, in the Winter Garden there are stained-glass partitions made of cast glass, wall paintings on the themes of Kazakh history (artists V. Tverdokhlebov, 1984).
Planning the building of the Academy is divided into 11 pavilions, 9 of which house the service and working premises of the institutes, the Central Scientific Library. The third pavilion houses the central lobby, cloakrooms, a conference room and other common areas.
In 1980, a building was added to the building from the south side, the so-called. "House of Scientists". The authors of the project: architects V. Eck, M. Pavlov, A. Ordabaev, M. Zvontsov, N. Belousova and others; engineer B. Vagaitsev.
The architecture of the main building uses classical motifs and elements of national architecture. The building has a three-axis composition: a monumental portal, two buildings adjoining it. The planes of the walls of the middle buildings and side facades are made in the form of large orders with pilasters and capitals.
Stylized motifs of folk ornaments and plant forms were used in the design of orders. The use of the lancet and stalactite form of the cornice, as well as the decor in the design of modern heraldry on the main portal, give the building solemnity and characteristic features of national architecture.
The interior layout expresses the spatiality and functional purpose of the building (the main lobby, a large conference room, other rooms, service rooms of the Academy's staff, a small conference room, auditoriums, etc.).
At present, the Central Scientific Library of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan, 18 research organizations and 3 organizations of educational programs operate in the complex of buildings.
The complex of buildings of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR is a grandiose architectural ensemble. The exceptional merit of the construction of the main headquarters of science of the republic belongs to the first president of the Academy of Sciences, Kanysh Imantayevich Satpaev.
K. I. Satpaev was engaged in the development and formulation of the main provisions for the development of the Academy as a whole and its individual scientific institutions in the future, in particular, the issue of the territorial location of the entire complex.
Kanysh Imantayevich assumed that the building of the Academy reflected the greatness of human thought, the scale of the tasks of science in the republic. The general designer of the complex was an outstanding architect - a coryphaeus of architecture, a fundamentalist, academician Alexei Viktorovich Shchusev, the author of many remarkable structures, in particular the Mausoleum of V. I. Lenin in Moscow.
A prominent specialist in this field, engineer A. I. Prostakov, became the head of the working group of leading architects and designers. Japanese prisoners were mainly used as labor force.
