The Dombauyl Mausoleum is located in the Ulytau district, 58 kilometers northeast of the city of Zhezkazgan in the Karaganda region, 24 kilometers southeast of the village of Malshybai, on the left bank of the Kara-Kengir River.
The mausoleum of Dombauyl is a monument of history and architecture of republican significance (Decree of the Council of Ministers of the Kazakh SSR No. 133 of 02.17.49). The author, builder and history of the creation of the mausoleum are not known.
The first written mention of the Dombaul mausoleum is found in Ch.Ch. Valikhanov in the article “On Kyrgyz-Kaisak Graves and Antiquities in General”. In 1946, the Central Kazakhstan Archaeological Expedition of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR (headed by A.Kh. Margulan), together with representatives of the Department of Architecture under the Council of Ministers of the Kazakh SSR, architects M. B. Levinson and G.G. Gerasimov, examined the mausoleum.
In 1973, an expedition of the Ministry of Culture of the Kazakh SSR made measurements, photography and topographic surveys at the mausoleum (M.A. Mamanbaev, M.K. Sembin, M.S. Nurkabaev). Mausoleum built of stone on clay mortar.
Floor plan of a trapezoidal shape. The entrance is oriented east. The total height of the conical building is 6 meters. The wall thickness reaches 2.5 meters. Dimensions in plan on the outer perimeter - 8.5 x 7.5 meters.
One of the largest stone structures in Kazakhstan, built in the pre-Islamic period, VIII - IX centuries The mausoleum is a tall cone-shaped structure on a base close to a square. The entrance aperture is raised 2 meters from ground level, to which there are five high steps of 37 centimeters each.
In 1974, restoration work was carried out: the corners of the building and the entrance opening were restored. The chief architect of the restoration project is M.A. Mamanbaev. Stone tombstones like Dombauyl among the Kazakhs were called "Uytas", "dynami".
Widely distributed in Central Kazakhstan, especially in the valley of the Torgay River.
